This is what I think.

I’m enjoying the Mets.

Off the field stuff aside, of course, it’s been fun. This comes with the caveat that it could be destroyed at any moment if Fred Wilpon decides he doesn’t want to pay what it takes to keep Jose Reyes, whose play this year has been a joy to witness, but if you can keep that perpetual buzzkill out of mind long enough (which is difficult), there’s a pretty enjoyable group out there that has managed to keep the ship afloat without David Wright, Ike Davis, or Johan Santana.

It’s been great watching guys like Justin Turner, Ruben Tejada, and Daniel Murphy do well. Jon Niese continues to improve, and Angel Pagan is bouncing back from early season struggles. R.A. Dickey has pitched well through a foot injury, only increasing his cult hero status.  On top of that, Carlos Beltran is getting the swansong he deserves as a great all-time Met, and the aforementioned Jose Reyes is playing like an MVP, continuing to make Wilpon look like a fool for his misguided Carl Crawford comment. Jason Bay has been nothing short of awful, and his contract is looking like a pretty big weight around the club’s neck, but I suppose we can’t win them all.

They probably won’t go anywhere this year - the bullpen is far too weak, and it’s simply too difficult to make up for the loss of players the calibre the Mets are without for that long - but the team has been fun to watch, if you separate yourself from the high expectations of the Minaya era and take it for what it is, a competitive if perhaps outmanned team. I also have to continue to hope that reason prevails and Jose Reyes goes absolutely nowhere for a long time.
